CASTELLO DI RODDI

The castle of Roddi is a significant example of medieval fortified architecture. The first indication of the existence of a fortified building on the site where the castle stands today dates back to the 11th century. The construction of the castle, leaning against the tower, dates back to the 14th century. Later ownership passed to the Counts of Mirandola in 1526 and then to the Chiesa family in 1690. Following the Congress of Vienna, it was the Savoys who took possession of the castle, which then became state property and, in 2001, the property of the Municipality of Roddi. The structure is characterised by a three-storey central body, built on a high and imposing escarpment, completed and defended by two cylindrical towers, one slender and tall and the other, on the opposite side, lower, the result of later additions and reworkings. The interior preserves decorations and coffered wooden ceilings dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries, and a precious testimony: the castle's historical kitchens, dating back to the 16th century.
