TEMPIO VOLTIANO

The Tempio Voltiano (Volta Temple), located in the area of the lakeside gardens and inaugurated in 1928, was conceived as a place to house the original and reconstructed scientific instruments of scientist Alessandro Volta. The promoter and financier of the construction was the cotton entrepreneur Francesco Somaini, who donated it to the city of Como when the work was completed. Architect Federico Frigerio was chosen as the designer, who, realising the work in neoclassical style and with an explicit reference to the Pantheon, wanted the building to be worthy of the great scientist from Como not only for the high scientific and documentary value of its contents, but also for its monumental appearance.
The objects on display in the Tempio Voltiano are a rich collection of apparatuses, machines and instruments, allowing the visitor to easily and comprehensively identify the themes covered by Alessandro Volta's studies and research, starting with the invention of the battery, and continuing with his fundamental contributions in the field of electrology, the study of gases and their properties.
