At Mastio della Cittadella di Torino an in-depth analysis of the crucial artistic movement that revolutionised Italian painting in the 19th century. The exhibition highlights the innovations of the fathers of en plein air art, anticipating with extraordinary modernity the later developments of the French Impressionists.
The exhibition presents 80 works of illustrious authors such as Giovanni Fattori, Telemaco Signorini, Giuseppe Abbati, Silvestro Lega, Vincenzo Cabianca, Raffaello Sernesi e Odoardo Borrani. These works dialogue with those of the Barbizon Schoolhighlighting the importance of this movement for the birth of modern Italian painting.
The exhibition is divided into several sections, starting with the Macchiaioli's relationship with the French art scene and delving into new techniques related to the landscape, genre and history painting. The seven thematic areas include: Florence 1850; The relationship with France; The relationship with the masters: the Academy and Purism; The years of experimentation; The Risorgimento; The years of maturity; The legacy of the Macchia. The exhibition thus offers a comprehensive look at the extraordinary contribution of this movement to the history of Italian art.
