The exhibition Elio Ciol. Glances and silences at Diocesan Museum Carlo Maria Martini in Milan is an extensive retrospective dedicated to one of the masters of contemporary Italian photography. With a selection of 100 shots, the exhibition route restores all the complexity of the vision of Elio Ciol, born in Casarsa della Delizia in 1929. His photographs are suspended imagesin which the landscapethe peasant world, the human faces and thearchitecture become signs of a poetic and spiritual investigation of reality.
From the 1950s, Ciol develops a personal style that combines formal rigour and depth of vision. His subjects range from Friulian countryside e umbra at American canyonsup to the Libya, l'Armenia and the Holy Land, also documenting works of art all over Europe. His photographs are never banal documents, but real visions impregnated with waiting, silence and mystery.
The exhibition focuses on his more intense projects, such as those in the lower Milanese or images from the film The latest by Father David Maria Turoldo, and includes portraits of great 20th century personalities, such as Pier Paolo Pasolini e William Congdon. Between analogue techniques and digital experimentation, Ciol's work is confirmed as a landmark in the history of art photography.
